Gagne’s Nine Events for Trainers

Session Description
Training linemen apprentices to be safe and proficient when performing their jobs require more than just reading about it, watching videos, and listening to the trainers. It requires a set of instructions that will stimulate, engage, inform, guide, allow practice and application, and provide feedback on the learned skills. This session will introduce Gagne’s Nine Events (Gagne, Briggs, and Wager, 1992) to the trainers of apprentice linemen in a utility company.

Gagne’s Nine Events was selected to help develop both the trainers and the learners, in this case, apprentice linemen. It was selected to aid the trainers in understanding that training involves instruction that is systemically planned to engage the learners and to maximize learning. This session aims to go through the Nine Events, introducing the events, the purpose for some of them, explaining how to use them, providing some examples, and providing opportunities for practice and application using some of their current training modules. It is intended to focus their training on the learner.

Aloha! I currently reside in Central O’ahu but I am originally from Kane’ohe, born and raised. For those of you unfamiliar with these locations, they are located on the island of O’ahu in Hawai’i. Both beautifully surrounded with lush, green plants and trees, and rain! Lots of rain!

I am a concurrent Graduate student in the Masters of Education program for Learning Design and Technology at the University of Hawaii. I am also working towards a Certificate for Online Learning and Teaching (COLT). I really enjoy working with technology and love trying out new applications. The knowledge that I’ve gained in this program has been exciting and challenging at the same time, but I have enjoyed applying my knowledge to the projects that we have been assigned. My journey in the Masters program has been full of challenges, but with the support of my instructors and Dr. Ho, I continue to push on.

I look forward to delivering my first online presentation of a module that was created for a utility company that I used to work for. Having been a teacher for 15 years, much of the theory, skills, and strategies being used are familiar and have allowed me to have some insight on how to engage the learners. But being on the designing side of instruction with the constant development of new instructional technology has been a welcomed challenge for me.

Much mahalo to all my instructors who have supported me! Please enjoy my presentation!
