Online Summer Math Prep Course

Session Description
Learning mathematics can be a difficult process and learning mathematics in a new language is significantly more difficult. At San Francisco International High School, a school for recent immigrants, students are tasked with the challenge of simultaneously learning course content while learning English. Due to this reason many students have struggled in their Pre-Calculus class because they were not able to fully understand the mathematics topics they learned in English. Not having a solid foundation in arithmetic and basic Algebra has prevented students from being successful in Pre-Calculus.

The purpose of this summer course is to help solidify the fundamental mathematics skills of students who are entering Pre-Calculus. The course will focus on mathematics topics that are crucial for success in mathematics but are often skipped in traditional high school mathematics courses since it is assumed that students know these topics. Course material will designed on different platforms and be centrally organized in Google Classrooms with links to outside sources. To meet the needs of these immigrant students, content will primarily be presented through videos lessons that will available in English, Chinese, and Spanish. This presentation will cover the development of this course and give an overview of the course prototype.
